Penelope just spent the past 40 minutes or so laying with the babies, feeding and what-not. When she was done I put her in for a little time with her cagemates, and to give me time to make sure all of the babies were getting fed.

I did a head count and came up one short… figuring one of the other babies was hiding one, I moved them around a little and counted again. Still one short! Digging around in the bedding (which is super fluffy, sheesh) I found a little baby burried in the back of the cage. Poor thing was just laying there wiggling around. Penelope has the habit of walking away while the babies are still latched on to her nipples and ends up dragging them around… and then she starts kicking around all the bedding!

This little baby has an empty stomach and a mom that’s too hyper to sit still. I must say, I’m concerned about this one–I don’t want to wake up in the morning with one less baby!

Other than that, the babies are doing well. Some of them are getting darker shadings where their markings will come in, and I’m able to tell the difference between the dumbos and the standard eared. I’m having trouble determining the sexes–guess I’ll have to wait a couple more days to deal with that.

I’m going to start holding each baby daily for short periods of time. Next week I’ll be able to hold them more.
