Runt Concern
The runt sitll isn’t eating. It seems almost as if he doesn’t want to, which I know is ridiculous. But while all his siblings are attacking Penelope for milk, he just lays there. So today I went to the pet store and picked up some Puppy Goat Milk by Esbalic. Opted for the liquid and froze the rest–pain in the butt to get out of the ice cube tray, though! I also picked up a medicine/eye dropper and mail ordered some 1cc syringes and nipples, hopefully those will be here within the next day or so.
I’ve been feeding him, or trying to, every couple hours and letting him get the chance at Penelopes milk while the others eat, as well as rotating the litter. I’m hoping to see a weight gain in him within the next couple days.
In other news;
The babies are becoming increasingly wiggly every day. I’m going to need to build a bigger cage this week or next week, the one they’re in now will be much too small for 14 hyper rat pups and a worn out momma!
They should be getting their fur and opening their eyes soon! It’s getting easier to tell which are agouti and which are black. There are berkshires, variberks, capped, and mismark hooded, as well as dumbos and standards.
Pictures to come!

August 6th, 2008 at 6:44 amI understand your concern regarding runts, it’s good you knew exactly what to do. When we noticed one of the babies was being pushed out we would separate mom and the runt and then continue the rotation. In our litters of the past the runt usually turned out to be the most beautiful and personable of the bunch.
